The Magic of the Southern Ecuadorian Coast

If living in Ecuador is comparable to living in paradise, then living on the coast is an even greater blessing, and here’s a few reasons why.

From Ecuadorian parents and nationality, I grew up in the city of Manta but it was not until my teenage years, thanks to surfing, that I ventured to explore the southern part of the coast for the first time. I headed towards the renowned destination of Montañita, a place of great fame worldwide for its particular “freedom lovers” lifestyle.

Today, 20 years later and after hundreds of waves surfed, I have witnessed the development, not only of the highway and roads, but also of the communities established along the way.

With a rustic but majestic landscape, a rural way of living, and the tranquility and joy of the people who inhabit it, paradise is around every corner. These “underrated” destinations grow peacefully in harmony and respect for nature, almost at a different rate from the rest of the “modern” world.

For proof of this you may see children playing peacefully on the streets and paths in the area or adults and the elderly practicing old traditions. Surfing has also become an emblematic sport and local merchants have prospered thanks to the dynamic economy generated by local and international tourism that is present, with some tourists even having the desire to settle here full time. This is the essence and peculiarity of the “south coast.”

Getting to the area is relatively easy, whether you are approaching from the cities of Manta or Guayaquil, from both points with a trek of approximately 300km, the journey is full of exuberant vegetation, native communities, and more than one attraction that will leave you breathless.

Why is it a dream destination?

The focus of this article goes beyond the description of a single place on the ‘south coast.’ We could focus on the youth and attractive day/night life of Montañita as an example, but as a regular visitor and resident of these locations for almost two decades, it is timely and even transcendent to focus on the elevated feeling that we all experience when we travel to places that enchant us.

It is remarkable how we are able to find ourselves in places where the perfect adventure and activities are waiting for us. These activities allow us to reconnect with our inner self and reignite the adventurous spirit inside us. It is not only adventure that ignites us, but also environment, the food and people. And the food down here will never cease to satisfy, as it practically comes right off the tree.

The ocean view ranches, the forests with specific flora and fauna of the region, hidden waterfalls, horseback riding, and beach tours are just some of the many reasons why this part of the world will amaze you.

But if we had to mention one outstanding feature of the ‘south coast’ or any of its stops, it would definitely be the extraordinary diversity of personalities that you will meet. Wonderful souls from all over the world, including the local people who have similar values, seek to share life with people who are interested in a more united world without judgment.

The art of knowing and exploring, always being open to new things, a sense of wonder, the joy of learning something new at every moment, and sharing and enjoying the here and now (which, after all, is all we have) are not utopian ideas. It is the essential creed to fully enjoy the magic that this Ecuadorian life has to offer.

Touring the south coast of Ecuador is healing, it is living in love.

Si Vivir en Ecuador es comparable con habitar un paraíso, pues hacerlo en la costa se convierte en una bendición aún mayor, y aquí te cuento el por qué.

De nacionalidad y padres ecuatorianos, crecí en la ciudad de Manta pero no fue hasta los años de adolescencia, gracias al surfing, que me aventure a explorar por primera vez la costa sur hacia el reconocido destino de Montañita, lugar de gran fama a nivel mundial por su peculiar y liberal estilo de vida.

Hoy, 20 años después y luego de cientos de olas surfeadas, puedo dar fe del desarrollo, no solo vial sino también, de las comunidades establecidas a lo largo del trayecto.

De rústico pero majestuoso paisaje, con un estilo de vida particularmente rural, la tranquilidad y alegría de las personas que lo habitan es perceptible en cada rincón. Estos “subestimados” destinos crecen pacíficamente en armonía y respeto por la naturaleza, casi, a un ritmo diferente del resto del mundo “moderno”.

Prueba de ello, contemplas a niños jugando pacíficamente por las calles y senderos de la zona, adultos y ancianos preservando actividades artesanales de alto valor patrimonial, el surfing además, se ha convertido ya en un deporte emblemático y los comerciantes locales prosperando gracias a la dinámica económica generada por el turismo local e internacional que se hace presente, incluso, algunos con la visión y deseo de radicarse a tiempo completo. Esta es la esencia y peculiaridad de la “costa sur”.

Llegar al área es relativamente fácil, ya sea si te acercas desde las urbes de Manta o Guayaquil, desde ambos puntos con una separación de 300km aprox, el trayecto está cargado de exuberante vegetación, comunidades autóctonas y más de un atractivo que te dejará con un sentido de contemplación único.

¿Por qué es un destino soñado?

El enfoque de esta nota va más allá de la descripción de un solo lugar, ya que podríamos enfocarnos en la jovial y atrayente vida diurna y nocturna de Montañita como ejemplo, pero como visitante y residente habitual de estas localidades por casi dos décadas, resulta oportuno y hasta trascendente compartir el enfoque y sentimiento elevado que todos experimentamos una vez iniciada la interacción con la zona y sus habitantes.

Es destacable, ademas de hacer enfasis en la exquisita gastronomia tipica que jamas dejara de deleitarnos donde quiera que visites (por la frescura de sus ingredientes), mencionar como hay lugares y actividades enfocadas en brindar una experiencia de aventura singular acorde al entorno, de aquellos momentos que te reconectan con tu yo interior y potencian lo mejor de tu Ser.

Las Haciendas con vista al mar, los bosques con flora y fauna específica de la región, cascadas escondidas, paseos a caballo, tours de playa son solo algunas de las razones estelares por las cuales quedarás maravillado con cada parada de este especial trayecto.

Pero si tuviéramos que mencionar una característica sobresaliente del recorrido o en cualquiera de sus paradas, definitivamente sería la extraordinaria diversidad de personalidades (personas de todo el mundo) que vas a conocer. Almas maravillosas provenientes de todo el mundo, incluida la cultura local que ha crecido con una visión y perspectiva de vida similar, compartiendo su hogar con personas que buscan un mundo más unido y sin prejuicios.

El arte de conocer, explorar, estar siempre abiertos al sentido de asombro, la dicha de aprender algo nuevo a cada instante, compartir y disfrutar del aqui y ahora (que al fin de cuentas, es todo lo que tenemos) no son una utopía, es el credo indispensable para disfrutar a plenitud de la magia que esta región ecuatoriana tiene para ofrecer.

Recorrer la costa sur de Ecuador es sanar, es vivir enamorado.
